Theinsectdips,itbanks,it doesloop-the-loops--andthenSPLATS unceremoniouslyagainstthewindshieldofawhitevanthat'stearingdown theroad.
TheDRIVERofthe van,a fifty-year-oldAmerican,turnsonthewipers, smearingtheremainsallover.
Hesquirtssomewiperfluidontothe glass,whichclearsitupa bit,but nowhe seessomethingworseupahead.It'sagroupingofheadlights,eight ofthem,all pointedathim,sealingofftheroad.
Hebiteshis lipandcallsoverhis shoulder,tothebackof thevan.He speaksinSpanish,whichissubtitled.
Thevanslowsto a stopinfrontof theparkedcars,allgovernment-issue fourdoorswith"INS"stenciledonthesides.Sevenor eightINSAGENTS standinfrontof thecarsimposingly.Theirapparentleaderstepsforward andcomesto thewindow.
TheDRIVERrollsitdown.AGENTJANUS,blonde-haired,blue-eyed,also governmentissue,looksathimandsighs.
ATTHE BACKOFTHE VAN,
theAgentsflingopentherear doors,revealingaDOZENFRIGHTENED MEXICANS,hopefulimmigrantswithoutofficialpermission.AgentJanus looksatthe Driver,who'snowheldbytwo otherAgents,andshakeshis head.

TWOMENget out,dressedinplainblacksuits,crispwhiteshirts,simple blackties,shinyblackshoes.KAY,fiftyish,istheapotheosisof world-weary;hispartner,DEE,mid-sixties,isjustweary.Theyapproach theINSagents.

TheRecruitslungefortheweapons,snappingthemupandtakingaim.SIX SHOTSarefiredat once.Andthen,a secondlater,aSEVENTHSHOTis fired.EveryonesortoflooksatEdwards,whoputshis gundownlast.
