GOLDENRODREVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 1.

501

INT. THE MATRIX - NIGHT

Fade in--

On the Matrix at code level, where we are traveling with the speed of thought--

Rushing through streaks of coded lightbefore pausing to survey an area from above, as a godmight.

We glide down for a slightly closer lookat the encoded metropolis, effortlessly movingthrough the walls and rooms of a skyscraper, until we again acceleratebeyond the speed of light to search--

502

INT. MJOLNIR - MAIN DECK - NIGHT

As the code forms the familiar dripsand we pull out onto the monitors of the Mjolnir's operator'sstation.

AK, Link's counterpart on this ship, beats his keyboard.

AK
I got nothing, sir. No sign ofNiobe or Ghost. Nothing but blue pills.

The crew of the Mjolnir are gatheredon the main deck.

MAUSER
Should we jack in and try to contact them?
ROLAND
It won't matter. My gut says they're down.
MAUSER
Then we should start back?
ROLAND
No. If that ship can still fly,we need it.
MAUSER
I was afraid you were going to say that.
ROLAND
Search every pipe, every hole, every crack we know. Sweep as wide as possible, as fast as possible.
AK
Captain, these lines are crawling with calamari.

GOLDENRODREVISIONS JUNE27, 2002 2.

ROLAND
Then the soonerwe findthem the better.
503

INT. MJOLNIR - INFIRMARY- NIGHT

Neo lies unconscious.Trinity is at his bedside.

The door opens andMaggie, the ship's medic, enters with a small plate of food.

MAGGIE
Thought you could use somethingto eat.
TRINITY
Thank you.

Trinity takes the plate fromher.

MAGGIE
Any change?

She shakes her head.

Maggie starts to check Neo'smonitors when Bane groans. She steps over to his bed whichis a reverse of Neo's position.

TRINITY
How is he?
MAGGIE
He's going to be fine. At leastuntil he wakes up.
TRINITY
What do you mean?
MAGGIE
The Captain has some questions forhim and he better have some good answers.

Bane becomes silent and still.

MAGGIE (CONT'D)
You see these cuts on his body?

Trinity nods.

MAGGIE (CONT'D)
I think they're self inflicted.
TRINITY
Why?

GOLDENRODREVISIONS JUNE 27,2002 3.

MAGGIE
VDT's maybe. I don't know. But,like I said, the answer better be good.
504

INT. MJOLNIR - MAIN DECK -NIGHT

Morpheus and Link have remainedat the perimeter of the meeting. Now Morpheus steps outof the shadows.

MORPHEUS
Roland.
ROLAND
Yeah?
MORPHEUS
I would like to run one more search through the Matrix.
ROLAND
For what?
MORPHEUS
For Neo.
AK
How could he be in the Matrix, sir? He's not plugged in.
MORPHEUS
Please, for me.
505

INT. MJOLNIR - INFIRMARY -NIGHT

Maggie re-reads Neo's lifemonitors.

MAGGIE
This is what keeps botheringme.

Trinity rises to see the display.

TRINITY
What?
MAGGIE
His neural patterns don't read like someone who's in a coma. The strange thing is that I see these patternsall the time.
TRINITY
Where?

GOLDENRODREVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 4.

MAGGIE
On someone jacked in.

• 506

506

INT. MJOLNIR MAIN DECK -NIGHT

The Matrix drips down thewindow of the monitor. '

AK
The big bubkis. Nada, sir. He ain'tin there.

Morpheus stares at the monitornot willing to accept it.

Colt slides down the ladder fromthe cockpit• •

COLT
Sir, I've got the projections.
ROLAND
How long?
COLT
Based on point of entry and theirpast speed, it looks like the Machineswill reach Zion in just under twenty hours.
AK
Jesus H. Christ.
ROLAND
All right. Let's move with a purpose.AK, get upstairs. I want you on holographic.

AK
Yes, sir.

He pulls off his headset jumping free ofhis operator's station.

ROLAND
Mauser, I want forward and aft guns manned at all times.

SuddenlyLink notices something.

LINK

ROLAND

ROLAND
What?

Link jumps intothe seat, throwing on the headsets.

508

INT.MOBIL AVE. STATION - NIGHT

Neo slowly,painfully, wakes up.

His faceis mashed against a grey concrete slab.Every part ofhim hurts. A hot-wire migraine sears throughboth hemispheresof his brain.

He peels open his eyes and sees a tinypair of shoes.

Intothe glare of fluorescent light, he looksup at a beautiful little Indian girl.

Shesmiles at him.

INDIANGIRL
Goodmorning.

GOLDENRODREVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 6.

For a moment he sees her asa program of pure radiant energy. Bathed in the shimmering auraof her light he feels his pain melting away. •

NEO
...who are you?
SATI
My name is Sati. Your name isNeo. My Papa says that you are not supposedto be here. He says you must be lost. Are you lost, Neo?

NEO

Where am I?

SATI
This is the train station.
NEO
The what?

He pushes himself up to look around. The ceramic tiles have been painted with the name ofthe station; Mobil Ave.

NEO (CONT'D)
This isn't the Matrix?
SATI
That's where the train goes. That'swhere we're going. But you can't gowith us.
NEO
Why not?
SATI
He won't let you.
NEO
Who won't?
SATI
The Trainman. I don't like him. ButPapa says we have to do what the Trainmansays or else he'll leave us here.

She whispers as if afraid the Trainmanwas listening.

SATI (CONT'D)
Forever and ever.

GOLDENRODREVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 7.

509

INT. ORACLE'SBUILDING - TENEMENT HALL - NIGHT

Seraph leadsMorpheus and Trinity into the Oracle'sold apartment.

510

INT. ORACLE'SAPARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Morpheus and Trinityenter the old apartment. An OlderWoman sits alone in thechurch-like silence.

WOMAN
Morpheus. Trinity.Thank you for coming.

They look at oneanother, unable to recognize thiswoman.

The Older Woman sighs.

WOMAN(CONT'D)
One thing I've learnedin all my years is that nothing everworks out just the way you want it to.
TRINITY
Who are you?
WOMAN
I'm the Oracle.

Neither believesit.

ORACLE
I wish there was aneasy way to get through this but thereain't. I'm sorry this had to happen. I'msorry I couldn't be sitting here likeyou remember me. But it wasn't meant tobe.

TRINITY

What happened?

ORACLE
I made a choice and thatchoice cost me more than I wanted it to.
MORPHEUS
What choice?

GOLDENRODREVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 7A.

ORACLE
To help you. To guide Neo. Now, since the real testfor any choice is having to

make the same choiceagain, knowing full well what itmight cost, I guess I feel pretty good aboutthat choice 'cause here I am, at it again.

TRINITY
You know whathappened to Neo?
ORACLE
Yes. He is trappedin a place between this world and theMachine World. There are links that havebeen constructed like islands, used fortrafficking information. SomehowNeo washed up onto one of them. The onlyway to rejoin his mind and body is tobring him back out

, through this world.

'

'

GOLDENRODREVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 8.

TRINITY
How?
ORACLE
Itwon't be easy. The link is controlled by aprogram called the Trainman. He uses it tosmuggle programs in and out of the Matrix. If he finds out where Neo is beforeyou get to him, then I'm afraid our choices are going to become difficult.
TRINITY
Why?
ORACLE
Becauseof who the Trainman works for.
MORPHEUS
TheMerovingian.
ORACLE
He hasplaced a bounty on your lives. You must be careful at all times. Seraph knowshow to find the Trainman. He'll go with you. For years he has protected me. Ihope he can do the same for you.
SERAPH
Pleasefollow me.

Morpheus remains unsure, unable to stepneither forward or backward.

MORPHEUS
Oracle .•.
ORACLE
Iknow, Morpheus. I can see you are filledwith doubt, clouded by uncertainty.
MORPHEUS
After all that has happened, how can you expectme to believe you?
ORACLE
Idon't. I expect just what I've always expected: For you to make up your own damnmind. Believe me, or don't.

GOLDENRODREVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 BA.

All I can dois tell you that your friend is in troubleand he needs your help.

GOLDENRODREVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 9.

Sheturns to Trinity.

ORACLE (CONT'D)
He needsall our help.
511

INT.MOBIL AVE. STATION - NIGHT

Neo sitsrubbing his temples, trying to piecetogether what happened.

SATI
Areyou from the Matrix?
NEO
Yes,no. I mean, I was.
SATI
Why did you leave?
NEO
I hadto.
SATI
Ihad to leave my home too.
MAN
Sati!Come here. Leave the poor man in peace.
SATI

• He stands.

MAN (CONT'D)
I am Rama-Kandra. This ismy wife Kamala. My daughter Sati. We are mosthonored to meet you.
NEO
Hello.
RAMA
We have heard much about you.Where we come from you are called "the onethat is expected."
NEO
You're programs.
RAMA
Oh yes. I am the Power Plant systems manager for recycling operations. My wife is an interactive software programmer. She is highly creative.
KAMALA
What are you doing here? You do not belong here.
RAMA
Kamala. Goodness I apologize. My wifecan be very direct.
NEO
It'sokay. I don't have an answer. I don'teven know where "here" is.
RAMA
Thisplace is nowhere. It is between your world and our world.
NEO
How doyou get out of here?
RAMA
There isonly one way. The train.
NEO
Who isthe Trainman?

GOLDENRODREVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 11.

RAMA
He works for the Frenchman.
NEO
Why did I know you were goingto say that.
RAMA
The Frenchman does not forgetand he does not forgive.
NEO
You know him?
RAMA
I know only what I needto know. I know that if you want to take somethingfrom our world into your worldthat does not belong there, you must goto the Frenchman.
NEO
Is that what you are doinghere?
KAMALA
Rama, please!
RAMA
I do not want to be cruel,Kamala. He may never see another facefor the rest of his life.
NEO
I'm sorry. You don'thave to answer that.
RAMA
No. I don't mind. Theanswer is simple.

He lays his handon Sati's head.

RAMA (CONT'D)
I love my daughtervery much. I find her to be the most beautifulthing I have ever seen. Butwhere we are from, that is not enough. Everyprogram that is created must have a purpose. If it does not, it is deleted.

Kamala looks away.

RAMA (CONT'D)
I went to theFrenchman to save my daughter.

GOLDENRODREVISIONS JUNE 27,2002 12.

Neo struggles with the ideaof a Machine loving another Machine.

RAMA (CONT'D)
You do not understand?
NEO
I just have never..•
RAMA
Heard a program speak of love?
NEO
It is a human emotion.
RAMA
No, it is a word. Whatmatters is the connection the word implies.

He reads Neo's code.

RAMA (CONT'D)
I see that you are in love.

Neo feels awkwardly exposed.

RAMA (CONT'D)
Can you tell me what youwould give to hold on to that connection?
NEO
•.•anything.

Rama smiles.

RAMA
Then perhaps the reason you arehere is not so different than the reasonI am here.
512

The joke gets better.

NEO (CONT'D)

MEROVINGIAN (CONT'D)
I am curious though, as to how it actuallyhappened. Do you know?

MEROVINGIAN
No? I did not think so, but it isalways best to ask.

He pops the olive into hismouth chewingit with obvious relish.

MORPHEUS

MEROVINGIAN
Always straight to business, ehMorpheus? Okay. So, I have something youwant. To make a deal, you must have somethingI want, yes?

MEROVINGIAN (CONT'D)
And it so happens there is somethingI want. I want them verybadly, and I think you may be the only oneswho can get them for me.

MEROVINGIAN

MEROVINGIAN (CONT'D)

INT. ORACLE'SAPARTMENT - KITCHEN - DAY

A small pair of handsdig into a mound of cookie dough, kneading a cascadeof chocolate chips and broken candybars.

The Oracle ismaking cookies with Sati.

ORACLE
That's it. That'sthe secret. You've got to use your hands.
SATI
Why?
ORACLE
Cookies need lovelike everything does.

Neo again slipsthrough the beaded entrance.

• SATI

Neo!

GOLDENRODREVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 27.

The Oracleseems surprised.

ORACLE
Iwas hoping to have these done before you gothere. Oh well.

She turnsto Sati, picking up the bowl.

ORACLE (CONT'D)
Sati, honey,I think it's time for a tasting.Take the bowl to Seraph and find out ifthey're ready.
SATI
Okay.

She scoopsup the big bowl with her cookie doughcovered fingers.

SATI (CONT'D)
I'm gladyou got out.
NEO
Me too.

The Oraclegoes to the sink to wash her hands.

ORACLE
So, do yourecognize me?

Neo readsher code.

NEO
A part ofyou.
ORACLE
Yeah, that'show it works. Some bits you lose. Somebits you keep. I don't yet recognizemy facein the mirror but I still love candy.

She offersNeo apiece.

NEO
No, thank you.

She pops a piecein her mouth.

NEO (CONT'D)
What happened?
ORACLE
I made a choice.

GOLDENROD REVISIONS JUNE 27,2002 27A.

She smiles. •

ORACLE (CONT'D)
Choice. The giftwe areforever unwrapping. And you knowbetter than most that certain choicescan forever change our lives. Sometimes, those changes are visible. Sometimes, they're not. Remember, what youwere like when you first walked throughmy door? Jittery as a June Bug. And now, just look at you.

She smiles almost as aparent might.

ORACLE (CONT'D)
You sure did surpriseme, Neo. And you still do.
NEO
You gave me a few surprisestoo.
ORACLE
I hope I helped.

She takes out a cigarette.

GOLDENRODREVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 28.

NEO
You helped me to get here. Butmy question is why?

She lights it.

NEO (CONT'D)
Where is this going? Wheredoes it end?
ORACLE
I don't know.
NEO
You don't know or youwon't tell me?
ORACLE
I told you before, no onecan see beyond a choice they don't understand. And I mean no one.
NEO
What choice?
ORACLE
It doesn't matter. It's my choice. I have mine to make, sameas you have yours.
NEO
Does that includewhat things to tell me and what notto tell me?
ORACLE
Of course not.
NEO
Then why didn'tyou tell me about the Architect? Why didn't you tell me about Zion and theOnes before me? Why didn't you tellme the truth?
ORACLE
Because itwasn't time for you to know.
NEO
Who decidedit wasn't time?
ORACLE
You knowwho.

Shepoints to the sign behind him. Heturns and reads it once again.

GOLDENRODREVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 29.

NEO

• I did.

Herfamiliar Chesire smile.

NEO (CONT'D)
ThenI think it's time for me to know a fewmore things.
ORACLE
Sodo I.
NEO
Tellme how I separated my mind frommy bodywithout jacking in. Tell me how I stoppedfour Sentinels by thinking it. Tellme just what the hell is happening tome.
ORACLE
Thepower of the One extends beyond this world. It reaches from here all the way backto where it came from.
NEO
Where?
ORACLE
TheSource. That's what you felt whenyou touchedthose Sentinels. But you weren't readyfor it.
NEO
TheArchitect told me that if I didn't returnto the Source, Zion would be destroyedby midnight tonight.

Sherolls her eyes.

ORACLE
Please. You and I may not be able to see beyondour own choices, but that man can'tsee past any choices.
NEO
Why not?
ORACLE
He doesn'tunderstand them. He can't.To himthey are variables in an equation. Oneat a time each variable must be solvedthen countered. That's his

purpose.To balance the equation.

GOLDENROD REVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 30.

NEO
What's your purpose?
ORACLE
To unbalance it.
NEO
Why? What do you want?
ORACLE
I want the same thing youwant, Neo. And I'm willing to go as far asyou are to get it.
NEO
The end of the war.

She nods.

NEO (CONT'D)
Is it going to end?
ORACLE
One way or another.
NEO
Can Zion be saved?
ORACLE
I'm sorry I don'thave the answer to that question, but ifthere is an answer, there's onlyone place you're going to find it.
NEO
Where?
ORACLE
You know where.

Neo's jaw tightens.

ORACLE (CONT'D)
And if you can'tfind the answer, then I'm afraidthere may be no tomorrow for any of us.
NEO
What doesthat mean?
ORACLE
Everythingthat has a beginning has an end.

GOLDENRODREVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 31.

She stabs the cigarette out. •

ORACLE (CONT'D)
I see the end coming. I see the darkness spreading. I see death. And you areall that stands in his way.

Her eyes bore into him.

ORACLE (CONT'D)
If you can not stop him tonight, then I fear that tomorrow may never come.
NEO
Smith.

She nods.

ORACLE
Very soon he is going to have thepower to destroy this world. But I believehe won't stop there. He can't. Hewon't stop until there is nothing left at all.
NEO
What is he?
ORACLE
He is you. Your opposite. Your negative. The result of the equation tryingto balance itself out.
NEO
Then you knew he would come.
ORACLE
He was as inevitable as you were.
NEO
And if I can't stop him?
ORACLE
One way or another, Neo, this war is goingto end. Tonight the future ofboth worlds wi·llbe in your hands. Or inhis.

INT. ZION - COUNCIL CHAMBERS- DAY

Lock addresses the council.

I

GOLDENRODREVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 44.

LOCK
In less than twelve hours the Machines will breach the dock walls. In every simulation we've run, we've seenthat once the Machines are inside the city, the odds of our survival decrease dramatically.

Theroom is crowded but quiet, everyoneintently following the logic of Lock.

LOCK (CONT'D)
Thus our primary objective must beto destroy or disable the diggers insidethe dock. If we can do that, perhapswe can prevent them from ever reaching thecity.

He speaks like a coroner, describinga cause of death, precise and without emotion.

LOCK (CONT'D)
If not, then the only placewe will be able to mount an effective defensewill be at the entrance of the Temple. It is small enough that it will forcethem into a bottleneck allowing us to concentrate the remainder of our defense.
TUCHMAN
Commander, what's to stop theMachines from tunneling straight into theTemple?
LOCK
It appears to us that the diggersare targeting the electrical activityof Zion. I don't think they are even aware that the Temple exists.
DILLARD
We understand that you have requested additional volunteers.
LOCK
That is correct.
WEST

LOCK

DILLARD
Perhapsit is best that it is not up to you.
LOCK
Timewill tell, councillor.
HAMMAN
Commander, just one more question. Has there beenword of the Nebuchadnezzar?
LOCK
None and atthis point there is no reason to expectthere ever will be.
HAMMAN
No Commander,but we can hope.
LOCK

INT. LOGOS - LOWER DECK - DAY

The lights go out.

GOLDENROD REVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 66.

There is a window between the momentBane understands what happened and the moment he fires thegun. It is a window that • is only a fraction of a secondwide--

But that is wide enough.

The lightning bolt slashes open the darkness,a sizzling ball of electricity that bursts against theground where Neo had been, but is no longer.

In the strobing light of the gun, Neolunges for Bane, diving into him, colliding with the gun thatcontinues to fire--

Raking up the walls, severing cablesthat shower the darkness with star-bursting spark light.

Neo tackles Bane, driving into him, toppling him backward, until they both crash to the ground--

The gun bouncing free.

The two men merge into a singlewrithing shadow, limbs flailing wildly as they fight to separate.

Gone is the grace and precision of fightingin the Matrix; Neo swings his fist like a club, bludgeoning it against Bane's skull--

Each blow laying open the fleshcovering his knuckles, while sending shivers of pain shootingup his forearm.

The fight is violent and chaotic;two dogs searching for the other's neck--

Neo finds it first, his hands clampinglike jaws onto Bane's throat. He leans into it,with allhis might, trying to crush his windpipe.

Bane thrashes madly, eyes bulging,until--

His hand seizes hold of a snakingblack cable, its end hissing, spitting embers like aroman candle.

He jams it straight into Neo's face, sending him screaming backwards.

Neo spins towardthe sound and Bane freezes, realizingtwo things at once:the gun is at Neo's feet, but he can'tsee it.

Neo is blind.

Bane laughsas Neo tries to find his bearings, steppingaway from thegun.

BANE
I wish you couldsee yourself, Mr. Anderson.

Bane leadsNeo further away, his voice luringhim into the main chamber.

BANE (CONT'D)
Justwaiting to be put out of your misery.

Raisingthe pipe, he swings it like abat, but just as it's aboutto cave in Neo's head--

Neo ducks.

Baneblinks in disbelief, immediatelyswinging again, but Neo catcheshold of his wrist. Bane is againsurprised as Neo leansin, his ruined eyes looking atBane or more accurately, lookinginto him as--

GOLDENRODREVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 68.

NEO
I can see you.

Smith's face slackens with fear asNeo attacks--

Twisting Bane's arm, snapping itviolently as Bane howls.

Neo spins the pipe, jamming the endinto Bane's gut, dropping him to the ground.

Bane looks up, the white of his eyesbright against his blood- wet face.

BANE
It's not over, Mr. Anderson.

The ghost of Smith also looks up athim.

SMITH
It'snot over.

Neo brings the pipe down, bashingin Bane's skull as--

The ghost head explodes, the entireskein of Smith bursting apart like a balloon, particles of lightrushing up and away as if a fierce wind blew through abonfire.

In one world, Neo stands over Bane's lifelessbody.

It emerges with a finalrearing thrust, then tips free and falls--

Smashing through the laceworkof catwalks, before crashing into the knotted tangleof pipe at the base of Zion, burying into the bedrock andmetal like a knife to its hilt.

Neo climbs. Feeling hisway, rising from the wreckage along the coiled mechanical intestines.

There are sounds all aroundhim: a ratcheting clatter that rises and fades like a rattlesnakewarning, the hiss of a radiator pipe, the scrapeof a rake dragged against concrete. The sounds circle as ifpatiently watching him like vultures watching a dying man.

He heaves himself up intoa large passageway running hQrizontally through thetower. It spirals, coiling inward, woven out of shinymetal rods that are ribbed and knuckled like bones.

750

At the end of thepassage there is an opening that windows out of the tower.Neo moves towards it, until he standson the edge, awed bywhat he sees.

751

EXT. MACHINE CITY TOWER- NIGHT

He sees the Machinecity, an endless sprawling metropolis built out of pureenergy. Towers of glowing spun glassrise up from crystallinestructures of radiant light.

Everywhere, hoveringlike hummingbirds, are creatures seemingly createdout of fibers of light, soldered into patterns of a threedimensional circuit board.

There is a celestialand even spiritual quality tothe image, until we revealthe city-in-itself--

A dark industrialnightmare. Underlit by angry burstsof lightning. Demons ofblack steel and chrome hang everywhere, Jcrawling alongthe walls, the springs in their limbs tightening like arat trap being loaded--

While thousandsof blood-red eyes bore into Neo.

GOLDENRODREVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 116.

Suddenly those closestto him, scatter, leaping fromthe walls, flying away, clearing, as small fish run fromthe approach of amuch bigger fish.

From below, anenormous and complex Machine rises to face Neo. It is so largethat it eclipses the entire city.

Neo steadies himself, overwhelmed momentarily by itspower and brilliance.

The Deus exMachina unleashes a locust swarm of tinymachines that seem readyto envelop Neo.

NEO
I only ask to saywhat I have come to say. After that, dowhat you want and I won't try to stopyou.

The locust swarm swirlsback creating an undulating ballof mechanical bugsthat remain in constant motion.

Neo experiencesthe Deus ex Machina as a huge ball of energy, like a sun, its facein constant flux.

The bugs coalesce andan almost human face pushes itselfout from underneath.

DEUS EX MACHINA

The voice has a synthesizedquality, resonating with a sense that it is not onevoice, but every voice.

Soon he will spread throughthis city as he spread through theMatrix.

The locusts begin vibrating, chittering and trembling like animals sensing a storm.

NEO (CONT'D)
You cannot stop him. ButI can.

Rage explodes from the face, spitting bugs at Neo as it screams.

GOLDENROD REVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 117.

DEUS EX MACHINA
WE DO NOT NEED YOU! WE NEED NOTHING!
NEO
If that'strue, then I've made a mistake and you shouldkill me now.

The facefades, the storm circling Neo for amoment before slowlycollecting itself as the face re-emerges.

DEUS EX MACHINA
WHAT DO YOUWANT?

Neo looks up into the blinding brightness.

NEO
Peace.

EXT. MATRIX CITY STREET -NIGHT

A sick green-black sky vomitsa raging storm upon the urban night-scape below. Lightningspits from every cloud like the constant flicker of snaketongues.

Black boots stride down thecenter of the rain soaked street.

We follow as Neo walks, glancingleft, then right at a city of Agent Smiths. They linethe streets, their perfect

silhouettes filling thewindows of skyscrapers. rt is a city

• of dark-suited, sunglass-wearingshadows. • Lightning flash-bulbs agroup of them, staring at Neo, smiling identically.

A singular Smith entersthe street and turns towards Neo, walking at him untilthey stand, like gun fighters--

Face to face.

SMITH
Mr. Anderson.Welcome back. We missed you.

Rain pours offhis face as lightning pitch-forksthe sky behind him.

SMITH (CONT'D)
Like what I'vedone with the place?

Another bolt strikes, this time in front of him, sowe see it reflected inhis sunglasses.

NEO
It ends tonight.

GOLDENRODREVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 120.

SMITH
Iknow it does. I've seen it. That's why the rest of me is just going to enjoy the show.We already know that I'm the one thatbeats you.
NEO
Theonly place you can beat me, Smith--

He snapsopen his coat, his body automaticallysettling into adefensive position.

NEO (CONT'D)
Is inyour dreams.

Smith'ssmile twists into a sneer and hehurls himself at his enemy.

Thefirst exchange is a squall, fast and furious,as lightningstrobes the water explodingwith every blow.

Theymirror one another, neither one gainingor losing ground untileach sees the exact same opening--

Simultaneouslydelivering a thunder packedpunch that sends both men flying backwards--

Neo flips and lands gracefully, while Smithsmashes down, concrete buckling beneath him.

Smithgrowls, cocking and loading himself, then firing out, hurtling up through the driving rain as--

Neo leaps to meet him and they collidehigh above the street.

Twoequal and opposite forces slammingtogether like atoms smashingas an expanding sphere of energyis unleashed from thecollision--

A globeof glass clearing away the rain swellinguntil it breaks open against the surrounding urbancliffs.

Thetwo men remain suspended in mid-air,battling, fists and feetthrown with particle-accelerator speed.

Neo fights with ultimate precision, but Smith has become overwhelminglypowerful. A blow snapsNeo's head back, sendinghis glasses flying and beforehe recovers--

Smithgrabs him, spinning like a decathletein the hammer toss, and releases--

HurlingNeo into the side of a building.

--

GOLDENROD REVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 121.

INT.MATRIX BUILDING - NIGHT

Looking back through the bored opening hisbody just created, Neo barely has time to stand before Smithbarrels into him.

The battle rages through the building, Smithpummeling Neo with wrecking ball force--

Smashing him through walls of concrete, brick and steel.

Smith steps through one of the holes asNeo struggles to get back on his feet.

SMITH
Can you feel it, Mr. Anderson? Closingin on you once more? I can.

Once more, Neo picks himself up.

SMITH (CONT'D)
I really should thank you for it.After all, it was your life that taughtme the purpose of all life.

He smiles.

SMITH (CONT'D)
The purpose of life is to end.

Neo settles into a posewe have seen before. He signals to Smith, "come get some."

Nothing frustrates Smith asmuch as that little wave.

Another fury roars throughthe building, but this one ends with Neo unloading an explosionof kicks culminating in--

Bullet Time; a final boot launchedlike a LAS rocket, blasting Smith--

762

EXT. MATRIX CITY STREET -NIGHT

Out of the building, sailingback through the sheets of rain until he slows regainingcontrol. He looks back at the opening in the buildingwhere-

,.

Neo stands, lit by flashinglightning.

GOLDENRODREVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 122.

Smith grinds his teeth and launcheshimself back at him while Neo dives into the open airand--

Again they fly at each other, the impact of this collision much more powerful thanthe first as--

Waves of force shatterwindows and rip lamp posts from the concrete like a hurricaneuprooting trees.

763

EXT. MATRIX CITY STREET -MID-AIR - NIGHT

They fight in mid-air,punching, kicking, grappling, locked together but in constantmotion like electrons chasing each other around a singlenucleus--

Oblivious to the height, they rise up beyond the city's glass towers until they areamidst the flashing electric tongues of lightning and the cityis a distant pattern of light beneath them.

Smith lands a seriesof savage blows that stun Neo and he slips down, twisting, lost for a moment, suddenly vulnerable.

Above him, Smithrises up just as twin bolts of lightning strike, haloingthe dark-suited demon with jagged broken rays of light.

With the crashingdin of thunder that follows, Smith attacks.

Diving down, he slamsinto Neo, tackling him, driving him back to the earth--

Streaking likea comet, faster than the rain, plummetingpast the mirrored towersas Neo struggles to get free, fighting, even as the inevitabilityof the ground rushes towards them and--

The unstoppableforce meets the immovable object.

764

EXT. MATRIX STREETCRATER - NIGHT

The concussiveblast craters the street, buckling buildings, as a wave ofunequaled destruction rushes out over the urban chasm.

The explosionthunders away until there is only the hissing rain, as the Smithsgather along the crater's edge.

Inside the bowlof earth is the exposed viscera of the metropolis;broken pipes, sparking cables and rent sewers.

The rain onhis face slowly brings Neo's consciousnessback.

GOLDENROD REVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 123.

Smith stands over him as he tries to getup.

SMITH
Why, Mr. Anderson?

It is an effort to even pull his armfrom the wet sucking mud.

SMITH (CONT'D)
Why do you do it? Why get up?Why keep fighting?

Neo rolls over, pushing himselfto his hands and knees.

SMITH (CONT'D)
Do you believe you're fightingfor something? For more than yoursurvival? Can you tell me what it is?Do you even know?

Neo glares at him withanimal-like eyes.

SMITH (CONT'D)
Is it freedom? Or truth?Perhaps peace?

, Yes? No? Could it be forlove?

• He laughs.

SMITH (CONT'D)
Illusions, Mr.Anderson. Vagaries of perception. Thetemporary constructs of a feeble human intellecttrying desperately to justify an existencethat is without meaning orpurpose.

Neo's hands clenchinto fists.

SMITH (CONT'D)
And all ofthem as artificial as the Matrix itself, although only a human mind could inventsomething as insipid as love.

Rain streaksthe mud down Neo's face like blacktears.

SMITH (CONT'D)
You mustbe able to see it, Mr. Anderson. You mustknow it by now. You can't win. It's pointlessto keep fighting.

Neo summons hisstrength and once more, he stands.

j

I

GOLDENROD REVISIONS JUNE 2002 124.

SMITH (CONT'D)
Why, Mr. Anderson? Why? Whydo you persist?!
NEO
Because I choose to.

Smith howls in frustration, hurling at him, but Neo absorbs the attack, catching Smithmomentarily off-balance---

Firing back a furious attackthat has Smith reeling, unable to defend himself asNeo loadsup a bomb. It is not a punch; it is a cannonball--

Shot into Bullet Time;his fist shattering through the glass- like rods of rain as ithurls at Smith--

Connecting flush, distortinghis features as the flesh of his face is knocked loose andhis eyes go blank.

He staggers, stunned, out on his feet as Neo hauls back and gathers the Tai-chi ball, summoning every last bit of his energy, his life-force,then--

Slams it into Smith, catapulting him into the wall of the crater--

Burying him from sight.

Neo sways in the rainwith barely enough strength to standas the army of Smiths lookdown from the crater edge.

A low ominous rumblebegins to shake the earth. Neo dropshis head unable towatch as the rumble rises until--

The wall of the craterexplodes like an exit wound, earth and asphalt shot-gunning -f-rryrn--~---~~-......hi~r,-r:::itro·:;1--~~~

He hangs in the air,his mud-covered face distortedwith rage.

SMITH
This is my world!My world!

He dives intoNeo who has nothing left and batters him, each bludgeoningblow striking in time with searing boltsof lightning.

He seizes Neoby the throat, hoisting him up like arag doll and fires a super-punchthat sends Neo flying--

Bouncing downto the earth like a crashing airplane, trenching to a stop.

GOLDENROD REVISIONS JUNE 27, 2002 125.

Smith is about to press his frenziedassault, but he freezes, the image of Neo laying splayed, suddenly familiar.

SMITH (CONT'D)
Wait... I've seen this... This is it! This is the end!

He looks at Neo and in a flash oflightning we see the immediate future as Smith stabshis entire fist into Neo's chest.

Smith blinks away the raindropsblurring his vision.

SMITH (CONT'D)
Yes, you were laying right there, just like that... And I ...

Another flash and we see the blackmirror begin to cover Neo's body.

Smith walks over to Neo who is desperatelyclinging to his consciopsness as if hanging from theedge of a precipice.

SMITH (CONT'D)
Istand here, right here and I'm supposed to say something... I say...

Again the future flashes in his eyes andhe sees Neo's hands buried beneath the gleaming blackness.

SMITH (CONT'D)
Everything that has a beginning, has an end.

Thefamiliar words suddenly clear Neo'smind. He looks up as Smithlooks down.

SMITH (CONT'D)
Don'tbe afraid, Neo.

Neo almostcan't believe what he just heardas--

Anotherflash reveals the liquid obsidian coveringNeo's face, but his face is calm, even serene.

SMITH (CONT'D)
What?What did I just say?

In hisconfusion, he looks to Neo who now understands.

SMITH (CONT'D)
No, no.This isn't right. This can't be right!

GOLDENRODREVISIONS JUNE27, 2002 126.

One final time,Neo rises to his feet.

SMITH (CONT'D)
Get away from me!
NEO
What are you afraidof?
SMITH
It's a trick!
NEO
No, it's whatyou want. It's why you're here.
SMITH
No!
NEO
You were right, Smith. You were always right.

Rain pours down Smith'stortured face.

NEO (CONT'D)
It was inevitable.

Smith's eyes fire,a scream rises up from him and in a crackling, blindingflash of lightning--

He stabs his fist intoNeo, who stands with his arms open, accepting the blow.

Exactly as in the flashingvisions, Neo is covered bythe darkness. Risingup over his face, Neo closes his eyes andis lost beneath the liquidshroud.

The whole sky continuesto weep as Smith enters him, possessing him, asthe darkness snaps into a perfect pairof sunglasses.

The mud covered Smithbacks away from the new Smith as ifnot trusting him.

SMITH
Is it over?

The new Smith nodshis head once and the old Smith smiles. And as a giddiness spreadsthrough him, he starts to laugh.
