Camera pansan arid expanseof scorched earth.J'ONN, a ragged andmalnourishedhomesteader ofsome alien race, toilsbeneath a blazingsun, his backto camera. He sinks anaugering deviceinto the ground,drilling in vain forwater. There aremany hundreds of holes inthe earth aroundhim.

J'onn reactsto the clop ofapproaching hooves.He tenses, thenwhirls aroundclutching a crudehome-made pipe gun.

Horse and riderthunder towardhim.

J'onn raiseshis pipe gunand fires a warningshot. The Rider reinshis horseto a halt tenfeet short of J'onn. Thebeast snortsand stamps itshooves impatientlywhile the Riderstudies the frightened homesteaderand removes abreathing devicefrom his mouth. Finally,he speaks.

Townspeoplescurrying forprotection, anticipatingan attack. Thosewho considerchallenging Sybokare allayed bythe crude weaponsand intimidatinglooks of his followers.Sybok intendsto takethis town by show of forcewithout havingto fire a shot.And it looks likehe'll succeed.
