FROM THEAUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MALCOLM X

•The greatestmiracle Christianity has achievedin America is that theblack man in whiteChristian hands ha• not grown violent. It ia a miracle that22 million black people havenot risen up against theiroppressors -- in which they wouldhave been justified byall moral criteria, and evenby the democratic tradition. It is a miracle that a nationof black people has sofervently continued to believein a turn-the-other-cheekand heaven- for-you-atter-you•diephilosophy. It is a miraclethat the American black peoplehave remained a peacefulpeople, whila catching all thecenturies of hell thatthey have caught,.here in thewhite man'• heaven. Themiracle ia that the white man'spuppet Negro leaders, hispreachers and the educated Negroesladen with degrees andother ■ who have been allowedto wax fat off their blackpoor brothers, have been ableto hold the black massesquiet until now.•
