ROTA

Tnis film is extremely visual. I~ is difficult to describe in words without running the risk of losing or bdring the reader.

I have come up with a simplified summary, tnerefore, like a reader's guide, which will conjure up the images in as few words as: possible:

the beginning is LEON THE PROFESSIONAL

the middle is INCEPTION

the end is 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY

Dqn't interpret this as pretention on my p~rt, merely a visual, emotional and philosophical point of reference.

FADE UP

The cell splitsin two, then four, then eight ...

With each new titlecard, life develops, methodically, diligently ...

PROFESSOR NORMAN {CONT'D) Animal life on earth goes back millions of years, yet most species use barely 3-5% of theirbrain's capacity. Rats, foxes, and crows are patentlysmart and organized, but it's only when you reach human beings, at the top of the animal chain, thatyou finally see a species using more of its cerebralcapacity.

PROFESSOR NORMAN (CONT'D)
Despite all these wonderful inventions and undisputable ingenuity we are prisoners of the natural selection so dear to Darwin - - adapt to one's environment or die. Now let's discuss a special case -- the only living being that uses its brain betterthan us. The dolphin.

MORE LAUGHTER IN THE HALL. JEAN SMILES SHEEPISHLY.

PROFESSORNORMAN (CONT'D)
Itis estimatedthat this exceptional animal with its permanent and beautiful smile uses up to 20% of its cerebral capacity. In particular, this allows it to have an echolocation system thatis far more efficientthan anysonar invented by mankind, but the dolphin didn't "invent" the sonar, it "developed" it naturally, and this is the crucial part of our philosophical reflectionthatwe havetoday. Can we thereforeconclude, thathumans are concerned with "having" rather than "being," and in fact "invent" only what they would be capable of developing naturally if they took the time and, of course, if they used theirbrains a littlebetter.

For the moment, it is justa hypotheses. I confess, there's nothing very scientificabout it. We are justa group of nerds playing with old theories, but if you think about it, it is very disturbing that the Greeks, the Egyptians, and the Indians, have already some notions of cells many centuriesbeforewe invented the microscope, and what to say about Darwin who everyone was taking for a fool when he first presentshis theory of evolution. It is up to us to push the rules and laws and to go from evolution to revolution.

SURGEON
Absolutely not. It'sjust ...

,The Surgeon heaves a sigh.

SURGEON
It'sa molecule fabricatednaturally by pregnant women.Labs have been tryingto develop a synthetic version for years.

:Shegives him no choice.

SURGEON
Pregnant women fabricatethis extremelypowerful molecule in the sixth week of pregnancy. In tiny quantities. But for a baby it packs the punchof an atomic bomb. It's what gives the fetusthe necessary energy to form all the bones in its body. This sudden surge of energy happensonly once in a lifetime. She whips them out in a flash, the blades swooshingthrough the air, and drives them viciously into the tops of Wang's hands.

The mobster screams so hard the slices of cucumber go flying. He is crucifiedto the chair. Gripped by pain, he barely moves. The earbuds fallout. Mozart floatsfaintlyaround the room.

Wang's mouth gapes open but no sound dares to emerge.

Her voice mellows, becomes almost intimate,as if relieved to share her ordeal with someone.

Lucy frowns. Her somber eyes mist over.

Wang looks at her like a puppydog with his frontpaws caught in a trap.

LUCY (CONT'D}

She grabs a cucumber

She eats the piece of cucumber.

Wang doesn't respond, of course. He didn't understand a word of what she said and the only thing he can think about is the excruciatingpain. Lucy peers at him. Slowly presses her hands over his. Concentrates. She penetratesthe man's skin, cuts through layers of muscle and into his nervous system. In a few seconds, she has traveled these informationhighways to his brain. Shit, you gave me a frightringing the bell like a headcase!

Caroline steps forwardand gives Lucy a hug.

Lucy immediately forms a complete pictureof her friend's body: bones, muscles, veins, waves, equations, everything. A scan from head to toe in five seconds.

Caroline steps back. Lucy is slightlyin shock.

CAROLINE (CONTD)

Have you lost your keys?
CAROLINE
Uh...Sure.

Lucy heads into the living room, sits straightdown at the computer and types at mind-blowing speed.

Caroline flops on the couch and goes back to painting her nails.

CAROLINE (CONTD)
You're into computers now.

Lucy browses scientificwebsites. So fast,it'simpossible to keep up.

CAROLINE

Lucy takes a deep breath.

Her tone is clipped, devoid of emotion. Caroline is frozen, stunned, the nail polish in her hands.

CAROLINE
"Come up with something?"

Lucy goes back to the computer.

Caroline's beautifuleyes begin to fillwith tears.

CAROLINE
Lucy, is this some kind of joke?

Caroline begins to cry. Lucy concentrateson the computer.

CAROLINE (CONT'D)
Why are you tellingme all this? You don't know what the fuck you're talking about. First, you don't even know Franco. You never met him. Did Richard tellyou this crap? Is thatit? Richard is a jealous little shit because I wouldn't fuck him. He'll do anything to hurt me.

Caroline cries more. Lucy continues typing.

CAROLINE (CONTD)
Why are you being so meanto me? I know my lifeis a littlemessed up, but it's not any reason to throw it up at me like this. I've always been your friend,I've always told you all my secrets.Everything. I trusted you. Why are you trying to hurt me like this?

Her anger begins to rise ...justas Lucy said it would.

CAROLINE (CONT'D)
You think you're betterthan me? Look at you? You're 25 and you're stillworking as a salesgirl in a second-handclothes storeto pay your way through college. So maybe you're more intelligentthan me because you had a littlemore school, but what have you done with your fabulous education? Huh? You're like me! Stilllost, tryingto find who the hell you are. and while you wait forthe 'great' answer all you do is partyin the same clubs as me, so what is your fucking problem that you have to lay this shit on me.

Caroline is desperate. Tears flow uncontrollably.

CAROLINE (CONT'D)
And why are you saying I'm sick? That's not true! It'snot! Tell me you were justmaking it up. Tell me it's not true!

Lucy is stillsilent, typing away.

CAROLINE

Since when do you speak Chinese?!

Bemused, Caroline holds the prescriptionin her fingertips. Trembling.

CAROLINE
Lucy...Idon't understand any of this.

Lucy means it, but she's in a hurry and turnsback to the laptop.

Thank you.
PROFESSOR NORMAN

What are you talking about? I ...I'm not sure I follow you.

There's a hint of sadness in Lucy's voice. Regret.

The Professoris simultaneously concerned and fascinated.

PROFESSOR NORMAN
Look, I ...I don't know what to say... I'vebeen working on this theory for twenty years, but it's only ever been hypotheses and research ideas. I never thought ...I mean... That one day somebody...You have control of your body?
PROFESSOR NORMAN
(awed)
That's amazing.
PROFESSOR NORMAN
You can feel... everything?
PROFESSOR NORMAN
That must be unbearable.

Tears run down Lucy's cheeks. She takes one and studies it.

The Professor is worriedforher.

PROFESSOR NORMAN
If you don't want to lose everything, you have to pass it on. All this astonishing knowledge, all this learning you are acquiring can help others, the whole of humanity. You have to pass on your knowledge, like a simple cell would to keep going through time.

Really? Lucy's a prettyname. And quite rare for an American, I believe. To be called Lucy. But it's very common in France. How did that happen?

Lucy is in no mood forgames. She stops in the middle of the concourse and closes her eyes to gather her concentration.

He glances around as if expecting to find a hidden camera filming him.

Lucy startsmovingagain, headed forCustoms.

Del Rio is shocked.

His buddies are too busy cracking jokes to notice anything. He walks around his desk and sits down.Picks up the red pen.

DEL RIO

Pierre takes notes.

Lucy hands her passport to the Customs Officer.

A snifferdog ambles over.

DEL RIO
Okay... What form are the drugs in? Bars? Capsules?
DEL RIO
Pardon me?

Lucy lowers her dark glasses.

The dog recoils, its tailbetween its legs. Lucy nudges her glasses back up her nose.

She stops beside Lucy, who has two laptops in frontof her and types on both at the same time.

The Flight Attendantpauses.

She's seen some financial whizkids on this flight, but none like this one.

FLIGHT ATTENDANT
Miss, Ihave to ask you to put away your computers now.

Lucy is engrossed in the thousands of items of coded information scrolling past her eyes. It'sillegible for any normal human being.

She touches the backs of her hands.

The skin comes away, revealing the veins and flesh. Soon her fingertipsdisintegrateas if each cell is now independent, like a pearl necklace afterthe chain breaks. Lucy's fingersmorph into thousands of littleballs floatingin frontof her. Lucy is horrified.

She scrambles to unbuckle her seat belt, hauls herselfup and staggers to the restroom.

The CabinManager sees her.

CABIN MANAGER

I She looks at the streetup ahead.Thousands of beams of green ilight interweave. She can simultaneously see every telephone signal.

Suddenly, one in particularcatches her attention.

Lucy is focused on the telephone signals. She begins to organize all the beams using the window like the screen of an iPaduntil she finds the red beam. Closing in on it, the red beam appears to be made up of Chinese characters.

She scans the radio fora particularfrequency.

DEL RIO

Just then, the door opens and Lucy enters.

Norman staresat her in awe. She hands Del Rio his phone.

I

The cop is carrying the attachecase.

PROFESSOR NORMAN
(mesmerized)
It'sa pleasure to meet you.

Now Del Rio blushes.

PROFESSOR NORMAN
Oh? Nice to meet you. Let me introducemy colleagues. First, ProfessorCantie,a neurosurgeon who --

Lucy has no time to lose.

PROFESSOR NORMAN
Oh, yes. Of course! Gentlemen, this is Lucy, the firstwomanto ...I mean...

A confused murmur fromhis colleagues.

PROFESSOR NORMAN (CONT'D)
(to the scientists)
As I mentioned earlier,MissLucy, forreasons thatremain a mystery to me, has unlocked certain parts of her brain, offeringher access, apparently, to previously unexplored cerebralzones.

Silence. The scientistsare perplexed.

PROFESSOR#1 You have access to your RAM or to your hard drive? Or both?

PROFESSOR#1 (skeptical) Canyou give us a sample?

•Lucy hardly seems affected.

PROFESSOR#3 How didyou manageto access all this information?

She raises her handand makes her fingersstretchuntil they

ARE IMPROBABLY LONG.

Her handswitches to threefingers, like a batrachian--a remnant of bygone DNA.

The scientistsare speechless.

PROFESSOR#3 And you can control them all? In anyoneyou meet?

PROFESSOR NORMAN
(remembers the lesson)
Like dominoes.

PROFESSOR#2 And... What stage are you at now?

Lucy makes a sculpture on the table rise and hover in frontof her. The sculpturebegins to change, morphing into all kinds of weird and wonderful shapes.

PROFESSORNORMAN
(to himself)
Breathtaking!
PROFESSORNORMAN
Why slow it down?

The professorsare speechless. Del Rio is lost.

PROFESSOR NORMAN
(realizes)
Are you saying that"Fear" stops us from going further?
74

LUCY WATCH A SCREEN, AND IMAGES OF A FOETUSGROWING APPEARS.

PROFESSOR NORMAN
(nods)
Like a frightenedhorse who can only walk with blinders on its eyes.
PROFESSOR NORMAN
But if humansare not the unit of measure, if the world isn't governed by mathematical laws, what governs all that?

Lucy takes a deep breath and slowly letsit out.

The truthisn't always easy to say.

PROFESSORNORMAN
(fascinated;to himself)
Time is unity.

The scientistsare in shock. Torn between bewildermentand , fascination. Between the real and the divine.

PROFESSOR DAGUAN
And God in all of this?

Awkward silence.

PROFESSOR NORMAN
Lucy... What do you intend to do with all this knowledge?

Norman smiles, delighted to have been heard.

PROFESSOR NORMAN
(slightlyharassed)
Okay, we're ready, I think.
PROFESSOR NORMAN
(anxious)
Are you sure you stillneed such huge doses? You said that the doors to knowledge were openingone afterthe other.
PROFESSOR NORMAN
Oh? And then?

The Professor smiles. But he soonbecomes serious again.

PROFESSOR NORMAN
Lucy... All this knowledge...Itwill be a wonderful giftthat you are giving humanity.
PROFESSOR NORMAN
(awkwardly)
I'lltry.I'm not sure those who govern us will put it to gooduse or resistthe lure of profit.
PROFESSOR NORMAN
That sounds sensible but, in that case, how will I ever know where you've storedit alI?

They share a smile.

PROFESSOR NORMAN
Iknow this probably doesn't mean much to you anymore but ...You're a beautifulperson, Lucy, and it's been a pleasure gettingto know you.

Del Rio shyly comes over to Lucy

DEL RIO
(murmurs)
Are you sure you know what you're doing?
DEL RIO
CanI do anything to help?

:Andhe does. He kisses her with all his heart.

DEL RIO
