A Chinese GONG SOON'DSand the gl 1ttering doors ot an !rt Deco pa- goda slide open to reveal a mammoth silver stairway down which rows or beautiful women start descending. (BEGIN MAIN TITLES) .

The lovely ladies are a mix or races and they sing a strange, haunting melody - one might think them a heavenly choir, it it weren't tor their sexy, clinging lame gowns.

From the ethereal beauties, we cut to a street urchin's _dirty race: SHORT ROUND is a ten-year-old Chi~ese kid wearing·a beat- up American basebal~ cap.

Sneak 1ng 1nto the club, Short Round weaves past the fancy gowns and silk suits, beading toward th~musie in the main ballroom.

Short Hound enters and stares across the smoky nightclub. On the stage, he sees a giant paper~che dragon laying curled around the pagoda. ,

Now, the dragon's eyes light up, its nostrils ~xhale smoke and its enormous jaws open. Out or the dragon's mouth walks the star of the stage show:

WILLIE SCOTT, a dreamy beauty singi!lg a sultry solo while the or- chestra wails the accompaniment.

But Short Hound's not bere to ogle crooning dames. He surveys the rich Chinese, AlllericanandEurop6an revelers. Jewels t'la.sh and cha·:nl)agne!lows. Short Round f'inally spots a taole of somber-looking Chinese men in suits.

Short Round chews gum and stares at the men. Then he tur~s to go. WU BAN, a waiter with a scar across his cheek, wat=bes Short Rou:nd leave.

As Short Round hurries toward the exit, be bumps into a ma~ in a tuxedo entering the club. Short Round looks up at the man, b~t we don't see his race.

Indy stares pointedly at Chen's recently bandaged hand. Chen mutters and stands angrily -- Lao barks a command in Chinese ~nd Chen sits down ~~ain.

Lao pulls a wad or cash out or his pocket and puts it on the table. Indiana glances at it.

Indy smiles and jabs the knite into the middle or the table. Then he l·itts his champagne glass in a toast to Lao -- wl:Lo watches expectantly as Indiana moves the glass toward his lips -

Suddenly Willie stands angrily, jostling Indy's arm so that h!_ doesn't drink h1!,.champagne.

A bonus, Dr. Jones. That is poison. You just drank the rest or it.

Indiana examines his champange glass and sees a residue at the bottom or it. Be swallows and reels sick, wondering if it's rear or the poison already taking errect.

Indiana finally reaches into.his pocket. Next to the cash, gold, jeweis and poison, Indiana sets down a beautiful small box. Lao and his men stare hypnotically at the exquisite gold and enamel box. ·

(nervously) This Nurhachi's a very small guy.

Nobody pays any attention to .her as Lao reaches tor the box.

Lao just laughs evilly -- 1.:1ttila waiter movesup behind Lao and the crimelord suddenly stMtens. Be lets go or Willie's wrist and rai.!eshis hands ott the table. Chen stops collecting t!le money and jewels. '

Iao Ian tenses as Indy smiles at Wu Ban, the Cbinese waiter with the scar, who is standing behind Lao. Wu Ban bas a towel over his hand -- under it, he has a pistol pressed against Lao•~ spine.

Wu Han groans and :sways. Indy .starts to stand but · Chenimmedi- ately turns the smoking pistol with the silencer .that be used to kill Wu Han --. Indysees it pointed at bim now and he remains 1n bis seat.

Kao Ian stands and grabs Wu Ban,·easing the phoney waiter into the chair he just vacated. The muffled· shooting hasn't attracted any attention. The nigbtclut> •ctivity continues as Indy s;,eaks emotionally to his dying friend.

INDIANA
Wu Ban - listen to me - I'm going to get you out or her~.

In pain, Wu Ban looks at Indy and struggles to speak -

Wu Ban dies and slumps tor"lftlrd.Indiana is shattered by tbe death or his old friend.

LAO
Don't be sad, Dr. Jones - you will soon join him.

Indy's gaze shifts rrom his dead friend to Lao's sneering race. Then Indy sees the murderous Chen giggling perversely. Indy's anger is compounded by the poison burning in his gut and bis vis- ion ot Chen's ug~y race bl~rs into a double image -

Indy stands up unsteadily. Chen assumes he's about to keel over I, rrom the poison -- but Indy suddenly turns and grabs a real wai- i ter at another table. The waiter holds a long skewer or roasted pigeons that he's just set afire --

Indy grabs the skewer ot pigeons tlaml)eeand burls 1t across the table! Chen tires and misses -- and screams as the skewer stabs into bis -chest and the burning pigeons flame in front or his hor- rified race!

This the other tables detini~ely notice. There are screar::sand all hell breaks loose. Indiana shoves ;:,astWillie anc :-eaches for the vial on the table --

But he's grabbed rrom behind by tao Ian. Indy e-ibows the punk, reaches back. andgrabs his bead -- and somersault~. lt'aotanonto the tablet

As number two son crashes into the table, the impact sends the . Emperor Nurhachi's ashes billowing into Lao's stricken race!

Indiana yells as be sees the vial or antidote rolling across the table - and falling!

Indiana dives and catches the antidote just be to-reit hits- the floor - then Indy's hand is brutally stomped on by one or Lao's henchmen and the vial roll~ away.

Indiana angrily raises bis bead, smashing it up into the hench- man's groin - the man bowls like a banshee and bobbles away.

Meanwhile, Willie watches Lao grabbing tor cash from the table. Wil11e lunges past the pigeon-skewered Chen to snatch the jewels, but unfortunately tao Ian knocks ebem orr the table 1.she leaps to attack Indy. .~

ndiana scrambles on his hands ai4,knees at'ter the rolling vial. People keep kicking it -- he alu.st has it when Willie runs into hi~, trips and lands on her back.;:,

~ IHDflNA Look out, damn it, Ineed that antidote!

WILLIE
Who cares? Where's that diamond!

Gunfire explodes and they both scramble 1n different directions. Indy dives through the fleeing nightclub patrons and slides be- hind a water-spewing fountain. Water kicks up as Indy is shot at by Lao and bis henchmen. -

Indy .seesthe vial or antidot_ekicked again and it spi?l.sa:ros.s the ma~ble floor -- reeling the poison, Indy shakes bis head groggily and splashes water on bis race. •

Meanwhile, Willie 1s chasing her diamond, shoving through the panicked crow~. She spots the diamond! Another elegantly d~essed woman is bending to pick it up -

WILLIE
(acidly polite)
~xcuse me, but I believe that's !I diamond!

Willie smiles and suddenly kicks the woman in the butt! Willie reaches to get the diamond but not 'beforethe other woman-tackles -her.

Behind the fountain, In-dianamakes a break -- he runs· .~nddives on to:por aserving cart. The wheeled cart hurtles tow~:-dan un- suspecting gunman, crashes into him trom behind and sends him flying head first into a row or ice buckets.

Nearby, Willie slugs the other lady in the jaw and grabs tor the elusive diamond just as the ice buckets shower ice across the floor - which camouflages the diamond! ·

WILLI! Aw nuts!

Searching desperately tor the jewel, Willie sees the vial or antidote spinning across the floor -- as it slides by, she grabs it.

INDIANA (O.S.)
Bey, doll! Don't move! ,t"\:

She sees Indy speeding 'by atop the serving cart. Lao and his gunmen rush out to block the way·.--:Indyrolls orr the cart and slides 'behinda potted palm.as L~~'s...menopen tire again.

Willie smiles meanly as she slips the vial down the front or her dress, thumbs her nose at Indiana and walks away.

INDIANA (Cont'd)
It I wasn't dying, I'd kill her •••

Hiding behi~d the palm tree, Indiana looks around and spots a gi- ant statue at the side ot the stage. Indy makes a break tor it.

As the gunmen open tire, !ndy springs onto a chair - jumps onto a table - and leaps onto the stage. Be grabs the golden broad- sword from the Chinese warrior statue!

As bullets smash into the statue, Indiana hides behind it. Then he jumps out and swings the large sworq. toward the enormous 'brass gong. · --

The crimson cord holding the gong is SLASHED! Indy slings the sword at bis assailants and gives the three-met~r-high go~g a helpful shove -

The giant gong rolls and echoes as i: crashes down the marole steps. Indiana ducks behind it as it gains ~omentum and rolls

I Willie yells as Indiana grabs her arm and pulls her behind tl:le gong with him -- · I' Lao watches amazed as he .aqdbis gunmen dodge tab1es trying to get better tiring positions -- and more benc~men come into the club now and start tiring machine ~I I I As bullets clang against the gong, Indiana and Willie run behind it. Willie hollers as they head directly tor a towering, tloor- to-ceiling window!

Indiana grabs Willie around the waist and, after tbe buge gong cruhes through the stainec-glass window, they both·tly atter it!

Finally they smash through the convertible top or a parked Dusen- berg and fall int·othe back seat! II

The Duesenberg races past the entrance to the nightclu~ as Lao and his men rush out and juJDI)into two black sedans. The sedans screech orr in pursuit ot the Duesenberg.

As Short Round eagerly swerves around a corner, Willie bolds on for dear life. Indiana suddenl1\.,putsbis hand down the front or Willie's dress - ,

'C W~IE Listen, we ju~ met tor crissake! I'm not that IQnd of girl! ~ ntDIAN.l Don't get your hopes up -- where's the antidote?

Indiana withdraws his hand, !1av1ng finally round the vial. Be opens it quickly, tips the vial to bis lips and grimaces as he swallows the sturr.

Pull a right, Short Round, and head tor the Wang Poe bridge!

A:sthe car accelerates, Indy peers out the back window at their pursuers. Willie notices be~ reflection in the sice window --

Look at what you've done to me! I'm a messl Hy lipstick's smeared, I broke two nails, I've got an aw- ful run in 'flr1stocking --I

Gunfire suddenly explodes, bullets wh1:z through the canvas top and the rear vindow shatters and sprays glass! Willie ducks and cringes terrified in the corner -

INDIANA
Somehow I think you've got bigger problem.

Indy grabs his shoulder bag and pulls a pistol out ot it. Ee pokes the gun through the broken window and starta tiring back at their pursuers - then he turns and looks ahead.

INDIAN.A.(Cont'd)
There, Shorty! Through the tunnel!

Through the windows we see the car racing into a tunnel. Lights from the pursuing cars flash through the rear window and guntire echoes in the tunnel. ,rv

Indy reaches over the tront seat and helps Short Bound navigate.

EXT. A SHANGHAI SQOALLE - HIGHT LC

The Duesenberg tears around the square, followed by Lao•s·two se- dans. People on·the street dive tor cover -- coolies pulling rickshaws go into hyper-jog - lanterns spanning the street crasb down and are dragged behind the Duesenberg. Bullets explode and f'I amazed prostitutes watch the cars zoom past.

INT. THE DUESENBERG - RIGHT

The chaotic chase continues - bullets wbine past and the shred- 11 ded convertible top whips in the wind.

I INDIANA

(shouting)

(r' You got the tickets, Short Round?

Sure, Indy -- three tickets! You, me and Wu Ran --

Shorty throws an envelope back and Indy looks at the three t1cket3. I I INDIANA

(sadly) Wu Ban's not coming, Shorty.

Unaware or what havpened at the club, Short Round thinks a mo- ment.

SHORT ROUND
Don't worry, Indy. Short Round number one bodyguard now!

Willie reaches tor the eztra ticket.

WILLIE
I'll take the eztra ticket.

The Duesenberg swings around a curve and skids through g~avel to- war~ the airfield. In the distance there is a small terminal bu~ Short Round wheels the car toward the cargo area --

A two-engine passenger plane is revving its motors and the last passensers are boarding. The Duesenberg squeals to a stop and Indy jumps out with Willie and Short Round right on his heels.

A contingent ot airport Military Police move to.bar their way until WEBER, a heavy-set Englishman, runs up puf~ing and shout- ing..

Dr. Jones, this is positively the last time our airline can hold a plane tor you. How you must burryl

Wbile Short Round grabs a small bag out or the car, Weber and a stewardess take their tickets and rush them all toward the air- plane.

Meanwhile, the two sedans skid to a stop and Lao and his ·sonIao tan jump out with their henchmen. The puzzled military police advance on them suspiciously -

Realizing he's outnumbered, Lao instructs his men to stay back and to put away their weapons.

Willie and Short Round charge uj{ the ladder and onto the plane. Indy pauses at the top of the st~s to give Lao -a·cocky tarewe_ll :salute.·Indy boards the plane an.dthe co-pilot slams the door •

EXT. TBE AIRFIELD ~ 15.

Tbe plane starts taxiing. Bytbe cars, Lao is out'teted by the prop wash as be angrily watches the plane roll away. Behind Lao, his son, Kao~. stares at the plane taking orr - a look on Iao Ian's race -indicates that he hasn't given up yet•••

The plane litts ott the airfield, silhouetting against the clouds and the first light ot dawn.

The sun flashes above the horizon and the plane banks through white billowing clouds as it beads west.

Tbe raft plummets down the mountain, c~ossing the timber-line and entering a forest. Bouncing over a snow-bidden log, the raft shoots directly for a tree --

Indiana pulls on the perimeter rope, rells on his side and man- ages to swerve the raft so it caroms orr tbe snow-drifted sice of the tree trunk.

Continuing its downhill ~un, the raft smashes across a s~all

stream, sending silvery water spraying.

Willie is hollering, Short Round hangs on wide-eyed and even Indy looks terrified as the ratt crashes down the rapids. Finally, attar one heart-stopping bounce, the ratt seems to slow.

36. EIT. RIVER CLEARING 36.

The ratt drifts out or the main part or the river and glides to- ward a clearing. Its three soaked and bedraggled passengers lie motionless in the bottom.

Indy's hand drags alongside tbe raft, his fingers leaving a trail in the almos.t still water. Battered and exhau~ted, but always In~y•s "bodyguard", Shorty looks over at hilllworriedly -

Hopeless women lift buckets trom a dry well -- finding only sand. Skinny miserable dogs skulk between the decrepit village b~ts, eyed by tbe patient vultures lurking in scraggly trees.

- 'INDIANA It's just superstition, Shorty. Like a ghost story.

Short Round looks plenty scared as they all stop walking. The shaman motions ar1dthe men with torches circle around a pile or rocks to illuminate them. Tbe shaman makes a gesture ot _devotion to the primitive shrine and Indy speaks to the village chieftain.

They took the sivalinga trom here?

Indy sees an emaciated child in rags running out ~t the darkness. Indiana moves torward and the child runs toward him. Indy grabs the little boy as he talls into his arms.

A tew minutes later, the little boy is lying unconscious on a blanket. Elders crouch around him. Indy is kneeling and watches the shaman .wet the boy's forehead with a rag ·anddrip water onto his lips.

Tbe little boy's eyes open and he begins to revive. Short Round and Willie watch t'roma corner as the little boy looks at all the races peering down at him.

Indy approaches two large elephants and sees their guide SaJnu trying t-opolitely dr.agWillie toward one ot them.

Dami it, Willie, get on -- we've got to move out!

Willie's head comes up over the back or the elephant as she's helped from below - there is a look ot sheer terror on her tace.

Waiting by tbe second elephant, Short Round sees Indy coming and runs up to him -

Two enormous wings open and the hideous race or a GIAHT BIT screeches and hisses at Willie! She sc:-eams hysterically as the bat flaps against her, biting and scratching at her before it ti- na.lly takes ott.

Indiana goes back and joins the scared, jabbering guide who is helping Willie down from tbe elephant. Short Round jumps down.

The three travelers start across a marble bridge toward the main entrance. Lined along the bridge, palace guards stand with lances.

As the threesome.passes, the first Rajput guard snaps noisily to attention and Willie jumps. As Willie continues across the bridge, the other guards snap to attention in sequence and she grins, enjoying the attention.

Indiana sees Chattar Lal bow to the dark figure -- and Indy catches a glimpse or the stranger's pale race and dark hollow eyes. Tben the robed &;)paritionsee~ to disappear.

Meanwhile everyone watches respectfully a: the Maharajah unfurls the whip tor bis first attempt. He flings tbe ·whipbut it flies back and snaps -- biting bis own cheek.

There's a stunned silence -- then Short Round laughs· at the little prince who is holding bis wounded cheek. The incensed Ma- harajah suddenly flashes the wbip at Short Round.

Short Round grabs the end or it and pulls ha~d -- the whip is tugged taut between tbe two hostile boys. As they draw near each other, Short Round sees something weird:

The little Maharajah's eyes beg~ glowing yellow and he hisses sottly in a strange voice. Nobodg else seea or hears the bizarre transformation... ~

Gasping futilely tor air, Indy sinks sl~wly to his knees. eyes bulge and he stares at the tiny, smiling skulls at thE or the death-cord wrapped around the assassin's fists.

Indiana sinks lower and~then reels sometlling - des;,eratel grabs a brass pot on the floor by tbe handle and swings it his last strength, smashing it up into the assassin's bead~ skull-crushing clang!

The assassin is stunned and Indiana curls forward, pullir into asomersault andsending him tlying over hi-sback. Tbt assin crashe.son his spine next to the chaise. Short Round doesn't wake up.

Indiana rips the cord from around his neck and ga:spstor b Besees the assassin pulling a knife. Indiana dives as the flies through the air and slams into the wall.

Until he sees that the whip handle is arching toward the c, where it gets caught on the revolving tan! The surprised a in is tugged upwards -- and the whip twists around the ce ran like !ishing-line around a t'ishing-l"'eel--

And like a doomed flounder, the assassin is slowly reeled dragged toward the ceiliug, his toes litting orr the~ floor. The assassin screams as he is hanfiedt Bis legs tw! his death throes -- and below him, Shortound finally wake

Short Round aP'l)roaches,holding the man at 'ba_ywith his dagger. Willie turns as the other guard, the one she kneed, crawls toward her -- Willie scoops up some dirt and throws it. The man claws at his eyes and Willie jump~ up.

Willie starts to run and Short Round 'backsaway, keeping the guard at a distance with his dagger. Suddenly the guard cries out in Bindi·and dives at Short Round. "1

Indiana enters tbe dark chamber behind the al tar. The only il- lumination is the back-light streaming around the silhouetted statue or Kali.

Indy slowly crosses a narrow stone bridge and moves toward a cy- lindrical shaft or light rising up trom what appears to be an enormous bole.

Indy hears voices and the clink or metal against ~ock as he con- tinues forward. The ground is dark in front or the la~ge hole. He edges toward the precipice a~d the light rising up illuci~ates

Indy looks into a deep pit around which concentric paths lead ott into numerous narrow tunnels. Crawling out or these burrows, i1 scrawny children drag sacks or dirt and rock. Other bollow-eyed I children pull these sacks to iμne cars waiting on rails.

Straining to lift the rocks into the mine cars, several ot the children slip and tall. Bare-chested Thuggee guards shout at the I' enslaved children and kick those who've fallen.

For these children there would seem to be only one hope -- death -- an end to their travail.

Indiana edges around the hole, looking into the ghastly mine and feeling as it he's discovered an inferno ot misery as grotesque as Dante's.

Indy shifts the bag or stones on his shoulder. Be hesitates and considers his choice: be h!.!, the Sankara Stonesand can leave. with them the-mnow•••

But Indy bears the pleading cries or one.child and peers down to see aburly Thuggee guard beating the pitiful little slave. Indy gets angrier . andangrier as be watches.

Short Round sweats next to the others, clawin·g at the rocks, doomed to work with them now in their search tor the last two SarikaraStones.

The leather strap suddenly flays Short Round's back and be barely manages not to scream out in pain. Tbe rat guard passes -- Short Round and the other kids pull a large rock which suddenly comes loose out or the wall -- ! ·

They fall back and see they've exposed a ve·in or molten ·1ava·! P.earing theirshouts, the rat guard retur:is -- yelling at their stupidity, he whips them and shoves them aside brutally.

Short Round sees the rat guard's eyes glowing fiercely in anger. Suddenly the fissure shoots out . steam andspews some molten lava over the guard's legs.

In the dark tunnel, a rock smashes down onto a chain•- and breaks it! Short Round is exhausted. He looks around furtively and sees a guard approaching.

Short Round takes a chance~- he dives and rolls across the tunnel. He ducks behind a mine car full or rocks being pushed out ~y two chained children.

The guard lumbers past unsuspectingly as Short Eound makes his escape using the moving mine car as cover.

The exhausted kid nearly collapses at the bottom -- then jumps seeing Short Round. Shorty motions tor him. to keep quiet. 1ma:ed, the kid watches Short Round scramble up the ladder. Shorty continues until he is h'ighabove the tloor.

Dirty races stare out ot the high burrow as Short Round stops climbing. The kids are astonished as Short.Round suddenly grunts and kicks~ ladder away ill,!the wall!

The high ladder falls in an arc and what seems like sure suicide slowly resembles a mini-Indiana Jones stunt as Short Round~wings to the other side ot the falling ladder -

Short Round holds on tor dear lite as the ladder crashes against the oppesite cavern wall~- giving Short Round access to the root-bole that leads up to the temple!

Short Round scurries up the ladder and pulls himself up into the chamber behind the.altar. He looks at the light flaring around the statue or Iali - I ,,,,.

Short Bound snatches the torch trom th~ wall and charges toward Indiana. Seeing him coming, Indy's eyes start glowing yellow and when Short Round runs up to him, Indiana suddenly swings and backhands the little guy brutally across the race!

The torch tlies out er Shorty's hand as he's knocked against a wall by Indy's vicious blow -- Short Round wipes a little blood from his chin and stares at bis hero in wounded disbelief.

Cbattar Lal watches approvingly -- a priest moves toward Shorty. Cbattar Lal looks back toward the crevasse -- ·

Willie bangs on the lowering frame, heat waves rlsing up now to scald her skin and she chokes as the sulphuric air burns her lungs! ·

Meanwhile Short Round is crawl 1ng backwards across. the tloorw1th a look or terror on his race -- Indiana stalks him, hissing, snarling, his eyes glowing --

Short Round springs to hi:sfeet and tries to run -- Indy grabs him and pulls him..;_ Shorty's hand 9J"abs tor another wall torch 1,,,,. and just manages to yank it treeI ~

Indiana writhes in pain and Short Round sees the evil yellow glow in Indy's eyes getting dimmer and tinally _going out. Now it seems like tbe o~d Indiana_staring at him -

Mola Ram shouts at his priests and another one or them runs to- ward Indy on the platform. Short Round dives and tackles the priest.

Chattar Lal finally leaps onto the crankwheel platform and Indy sees him pull a dagger. He slashes at Indiana and Indy has to let go or the crankwheel -- the gears scr~am and the chains screech! ·

Below in the crevasse, the iron frame plunges again toward the

Indy suddenly kicks the dagger from Cbattar Lal's hand, slugs him in the stomach and dives toward the cogwheel mechanism. Be grabs a iron rod and throws it into the gears --

The gears ma.t1glethe iron rod but finally grind to a stop. Indi- ana grabs the crankwheel and starts winding it up furiously.

Meanwhile, Short Round jumps onto the platform .with Indy and grabs a long wrench. Be starts swinging the wrench, keeping the last priests oft the platform. ·

The sacrificial frame finally rises up into view and Indiana , I grabs it and swings it over onto the platform. Be looks at Wil- lie anxiously as be releases her bindings -

Wi11 ie moans and moves her bead. Indy pulls her ort the tram.e and she starts coughing. Gasping for breath, Willie revives as fresh air flows into her·lungs.

Finally Willie opens her eyes ~nd she sees Indiana. Then she notice~ something else and manageS:-o cry out hoarsely -

WILL:'f Look out -- ! ": ~

Chattar Lal grabs a pistol tr~ an unconscious guard and Indiana whirls to see him pointing it--.- Indy kicks tbe gun from his band and suddenly Cbattar Lal starts shouting in a terrifying voice --

Chattar Lal's eyes glow as he lunges suicidally at Indiana, at- tempting to take Indy with him as be dives rrom the platform!

Crashicg into Indy, Chattar Lal knocks both or them back onto the sacrificial frame which swings out over the crevasse -

I Indy manages to dive orr the trame just in time. Be grabs hold I of the platform as the crankwheel screams and the frame falls!

Looking up from the depths or the crevasse, we see the frame with Chattar Lal on it plummeting downward into the sulphurous smoke! The frame finally crashes, splashing into the molten lava.

Chattar Lal's body explodes into flame briefly -~ his flesh is broiled off in an instant -- we glimpse a skeleton momentarily 11• and then all is consumed and obliterated by the blazing lava. ,_

On the altar, under the statue or Iali, Willie and Short Round are helping Indy and some or th~ bigger children rip down a long wooden panel decorated with hideous Iali figures. ·

The childrens' escape is bl·ocked by .the chasm seperating the altar rrom the deserted worshippers' area or the temple. The swelling crowds or children push and teeter dangerously on the edge or the tire pit.

Indiana and the others carry the wooden panel through the crowd toward the chasm. They stand it up and when Indy gives the word ....... they drop it --

Willie and Short Round help the last kids out onto the p,lank-- Indy sees one child's toot break through the smoldering wood -- the kid in tront pulls the child to safety.

Be runs over and pulls thdh aside - be steps out onto the plank and.takes a few steps to te~t it -- suddenly the plank bursts into tlame in the middle.

Indy takes one more step -- and then the plank breaks! Indy dives back to the ledge ot the altar and Willie and Short Round grab him and pull him up and the wooden plank plummets into the fiery chasm.

Indiana, Willie and Short Round run through.the deserte~ mine tunnels. They hear a rumbling noise and Indy leads them down a side tunnel. They stop and peer in~o a quarry.

A large cavern is the depository tor the mine cars rolling in with loads ot rock. Emaciated children (still unaware ot the re- . volt and the other childrens' escape) break their ~a~ks shoving the heavily-loaded mine cars.

Thuggee guards supervise the deadening work, while others oper- ate the pulley-and-hoist system used to drag the cars up the sloped dump ramp.

Behind this operation, a thundering waterfall cascades into a huge cistern. From-there, chutes deploy the rushing water to power the large conveyor belt below it.

As the cars rise up the ramp, they tip and spill rocks onto the conveyor belt whic:.bcarries them toward an awesome stone cylinder that rolls relentlessly, cM1sh1ng the rocks into sand.

From the side tunnel, Indiana watches the noisy operation.

INDIANA
Those empty cars have got to go out or the mines.

Be pushes Short Round who-darts out after a mine car roars past and dodges across the tracks before the next one descends. Indy -pushes Willie into position and bolds her ready.-

After another car crashes past, Indy shoves her. Willie runs out -- her shoe gets stuck and she freezes on the tracks! Willi~ sees a rock-filled car blasting down out or a tunnel di:'ectly toward her!

Indiana dives, knocking Willie safely to the ground on the other side ot tbe tracks -- tbe heavy car hurtles pa.stand--.c:raahesintc the cars in front.

·Indypulls Willie behind a massive wooden post holding up tbe dump ramp and they hide from a passing guard. ·

INDIANA
We've got to get across to the empty cars. Wait here until I signal you.

They watcb him run and ·burdle a pile or lumber, bound up three steps and duck behind a tool stack on the platform. Indy reaches out and grabs one or the passing slave children.

They see Indy put his hand over the kid's mouth and ·whisper to him. Ee releases the kid wbo sneaks away, alerting the other children who start making their escapes into side tunnels.

Now Indy motions to Short Round and Willie to follow. As they start to move out they freeze dead in their tracks and Indy motions again angrily --

Indiana growls and winds up to take a killer swing -- he steps back, cocks bis arm -- and suddenly turns and runs away.

No dummy, Indy dashes over and picks up a piece of wood. The giant starts toward hiM. Indy drops the wood and looks arou~d

Short Round shakes his head. They see Indy recover from the spasm as the giant rushes him. Indy jumps aside, landing on a loaded mine car that is passing by.

The car is being dragged up the dump ramp and the gi·ant jumps out onto it after Indiana. Indy quickly grabs a rock and, as the giant rushes him, Indy smashes the rock against the bis-man's skull! ·

Ontortunately, it's the rock that shatters and not the skull •. Indy dives to the other end or the mine car and lifts a large boul~er.

Suddenly Indy drops the boulder and grabs his arm, teeling a shooting pai11again. Then he yells as hereels yet another stab- ' bing pain in his left leg. ;·"""""' . \... WILLIE ~

On the mine car, Indy yells and grabs bis right leg, which collapses beneath him. Short Round takes orr. Be dashes under the platform toward a bucket-chain carrying spent water back up to the cistern.

Short Rou1ldleaps over the pool or water and gra'bs onto abucket. Be rises up on this make-shift elevator toward the rock balcony and the malicious little Maha.rajah.

Meanwhile, Indy is on the brink ot unconsciousness as the giant's massive bands throttle his neck. Indy's head bangs over the end or the mine ear and suddenly his eyes widen --

The car with Indy and the giant reaches the peak or the dump ramp and its upended -- spilling both of them and a shower of ~ocks down the conveyor belt!

Across the quarry, Mola Ram and six temple guards run._out onto a high platform next to ·thewaterfall. Mola Ram sees Willie and Short Round pushing the mine car.

Mola Ram shouts to bis men -- two ot them pull pistols and open tire!

Bullets ricochet orr the mine car and Short Round shoves Willie to the rar side or the car where they both take cover.

Meanwhile, up on a catwalk, a guard slices a sword through the I air and Indiana ducks! The sword slashes into a wooden railing I and the guard tries frantically to pull it out -- I' Indiana slams bis knee up into the guard's stomach and then smashes his tist down on bis neck -- the man collapses. Indy hears more guntire.

Indiana rushes along the catwalk toward the platform above. Be edges against the wa.11 below the plattorm, staying out or sight as he unfurls his whip.

One or Mola Ram's guards tires ap'ltn trom the high platform and , Indiana.lashes the whip -- tbe'4fhip wraps around the gunman's

As the other guards tire down at him, Indiana dodges along the catwalk and tires l)ackat them. A l>ulletexplodes near Mola ~ and he ducks back --

Meanwhile, Short Round and Willie have the mine car rolling and they jump into it -

Indiana spots the rolling mine car racing aross the quarry. Indy takes orr and runs along the catwalk ~- bullets explode around him, splintering wood. Indy reaches the end or the catwalk -

Suddenly he dives into the air and catches bold or a block and tackle! Indy skids along the pulley system, sliding down a cable toward the mine car in which Short Round and Willie are riding.

Bullets whiz past as Indiana sails in the air above the speeding mine car - when they are in sync, Indy lets go and drops into the

Indiana lit'tsa shovel from the floor ot the car and swings i: just in time - he hits a switch which CLANGS as they speed by-· and the car is shunted tipsy-turvy onto the track toward the twc tunnels.

Indiana is·crouched in ·theback or the zooming mine car blasting away with the pistol he captured in the quarry.

A gunman in the car behind returns his tire, tbe ex?losions lighting up the ~unnel wal~s.

Indy aims and fires again -- the gunman is hit and knocked back in the ca~. Another guard with a Khyber rifle moves up to the t~ont and starts firing.

Meanwhile, as tbe car goes into a hard turn, Short Round rides the brake -- beneath the car we see the brake-pad scraping on the metal wheel. · ·

The tunnel gets lower and Indy ha.sto duck under each beam flying over and can only pop up to tire between the low beams. , ._,,. I The rifleman in the car behind is reloading. Then he litt.shis 1- rifle -- !ody pops up simultaneously and shoots!

The cars descend again into a stretch ot much lower tunnel where the beams nasb past incbes-~ove them. Indy judges the beams~

,All three or them groan~s they raise the boulder a?ldshove it ott the back or the car ~ ducking instantly to avoid being de- capitated by the next b.-am!

Looking back, they see the gunmen pop up between tbe beam - and they see the looks ot terror on the gunmen's races as they see the boulder in tront ot them!

The Thuggee car hits th'!boulder and upends! The guards scream horribly as the car tumbles end over end, slamming against the tunnel walls, getting ripped to shreds so tbat finally only pieces ot metal, wheels and debris fly like a meteorite shower down tbe tunnel! ·

Willie whoops tor joy and hugs Indy who smiles modestly -

The car seems to slow as 1 tshoots toward the end or the tunnel. Indy groans and pushes harder against the smoking brake-pad.

The ca:-slows more and more until it runs down the ia.st few yards to the dead-end and. rolls gently to a stop, just nudging Indy's back against the wall... ·

Willie and Short Round pull themselves up at the -end or the bridge. Behind them a dark tunnel runs back into the mines. What's in tront ot them is hardly more reassuring --

The rope bridge across the gorge is a century old and definitely wasn't built by army enghleers. Laying across the two bottom rope-spans, worm-eaten and moldy boards otfer risky footings.

Vertical side ropes connect tne bottom rope-spans to the two up- per ropes that constitute the dangerous band-railings.

Short Round steps tentatively out onto the bridge. It holds him and he turns and smiles at Willie --

Behind them, Indy finally pulls himself up trom under the bridge. Be stands up and sees Willie and Short Round halfway across already. Then he hears something and turns quickly - be takes his whip out and ducks to the side or the tunnel as two Thuggee guards rush out.

Indy cracks the whip, catching the r1rst guard around the neck - the guard spills forward and trips the second guard. The fir.st man tries to stand but Indiana kicks him in the head.

The second guard gets to his teet and swings his sword-~ Indy ducks, slams him in the &tomach and dives tor the first guard's sword. Be grabs it and rolls aside quickly a..sthe second guard attempts to slice him in two!

Indy gets to his feet and immediately tinds hi.m3eltabout to en- gage in a sword duel with the enr~ed Thug5ee guard. Indy looks at the unfamiliar sword, hefts~, and tries to quickly decide the best way to use 1t -- ~ · ·

Indy swings the sword again, cutting into the other rope-span! It, too, is now partially severed and trays slowly. The bridge jolts and Indy and the guards sway precariously!

Suddenly Mola Ram shoves Short Round out onto the bridge. The High Priest draws a dagger and pushes Willie onto the swaying ·span, holding ~he knife behind both or them.

Theo Mola Ram-looks across the gorge and yells. Indy sees adoz- en ot the last Thuggee guards streaming out ot the tunnel - only to be stranded on the tar s~de or the new bridgeless gorge.;

Indy starts climbing up atter _Mola Ram again. Be grabs at the back or Mola Ram• srobe and pulls him down. ·s1ipping, Mola Ram turns and it's Indy's chance to punch Mola Ram in the race.

Mola Ram's eyes are glowing yellow and he's shouting incoherent- ly. Be grabs the_ strap or Indy's shoulder bag and stamps on In- dy's hand - Indy falls!

Indiana slips downward, scrambling'lso catch hold ot something -- meanwhile, Mola Ram now has the b~ with the Sankara Stones.

They see horses galloping through a narrow pass -- the British cavalry isreturning. Captain Blumburtt and the tirst trops draw up their horses and dismount quickly.

A russilade ot flaming ·arrowstorce the British to take 001er - they quickly start tiring back at the Thuggees with ritles.

ls the battle above the gorge continues, Indy and Mela Ram fight below on the dangling bridge _--

Indiana sees the Bigb Priest's eyes begin glowing and he hisses insanely. Mola Ram's hand thrusts out toward Indiana's chest and Indy yells in pain -

As Indy pronounces the magical words, the bag begins glowing and starts to burn Mola Ram as be clutches it - the stones begin to spill out or the bag and the High Priest grabs tor them.
