Yeah. My parents gotdivorced. My mom has a restrainingorder against my stepdad.
(beat)
He has... emotionalproblems.
DONNIE
Oh, I... have thosetoo.
(beat)
What kind of problemsdoes your dad have?
GRETCHEN
(long beat)
He stabbed my momfour times in the chest.

Donnie is shocked.

My mom and I had tochange our names and stuff. I thoughtGretchen sounded kind of cool.

DONNIE (CONT'D)
I got held back inschool again. Can't drive untilI'm eighteen.
(babbling)
I think when I growup I want to be a painter. Or maybea writer or maybe both. ThenI'll write a book and draw the illustrationslike a comic book. You know, change things.
GRETCHEN
Donnie Darko is acool name. Sounds like a superhero.
DONNIE
What makes you thinkI'm not?

Gretchen smiles. Shelooks over at her house.

GRETCHEN
I should go. For physics.Monnitoff says I have to writean essay on the greatest inventionever to benefit mankind.
DONNIE
That's easy. Antiseptics.

She gives him a look.

DONNIE (CONT'D)
I mean, the wholesanitation thing. Joseph Lister... 1895. Before antiseptics therewas no sanitation, especially in medicine.
GRETCHEN
You mean soap?
DONNIE
Don't knock soap.Without it, disease would spread rapidly. If we ran out... you and I would neverlive to see the year 2000.
GRETCHEN
Wonder where we'llbe then.
DONNIE
The best thing aboutsoap is that it's the only thingon earth that can never get dirty. No matter what crap you throw onit ...it always rubs off. And thereit is again... perfect.
GRETCHEN
Until it withers away.

She stares at himfor a moment.

DONNIE
It's a good thingthe school was flooded today.
GRETCHEN
Why is that?
DONNIE
We never would havehad this conversation.

She smiles.

GRETCHEN
You're weird.
DONNIE
I'm sorry.
GRETCHEN
That was a compliment.
DONNIE
Will you go with me?
GRETCHEN
Where are we going?
DONNIE
No... I mean, willyou GO with me? That's like... whatthey call it here. Going together.
GRETCHEN
(beat)
Sure.

She gets up and beginsto walk up the hill.

DONNIE

Ronald takes anothersip of Night Train... followed byanother dry heave. Blam! Abottle breaks.

DONNIE
First of all... Papa Smurf didn't create Smurfette. Gargameldid.
DONNIE (CONT'D)
She was sent in asGargemel's evil spy, with the intentionof destroying the smurf village. But the overwhelming Goodnessof the Smurf Way of Life transformedher into the Smurfette we all knowand love. And as for the whole gang-bangscenario... it just couldn't happen.Smurfs are asexual. They probablydon't even have reproductiveorgans down there under those littlewhite pants. The only reason they existis because of magic spells and witchcraft...which is all a bunch ofbullshit if you ask me.
(beat)
That's what's so illogicalabout the smurfs... what's thepoint of living if you don't havea dick?

Donnie aims the gun...pulls the trigger. Blam! A bottle breaks.

Mr. Cole... not onlyam I a TEACHER... but I am also a PARENTof a Middlesex child. Therefore,I am the ONLY person here who transcendsthe parent- teacher bridge.

She stands up.

MS. FARMER (CONT'D)
I have in my handGraham Greene's "The Destructors".This short story is part of my daughter'sEnglish assignment. In thisstory, several children destroy anelderly man's house from insideout. They destroy his house withoutmotive, without moral consequence. They destroy private property ...andthey get away with it.

Ms. Farmer stops thetape and moves to the blackboard. On it, she has drawna horizontal line book-ended by thewords "Love" and "Fear".

MS. FARMER
As you can see, theLifeline is controlled by twopolar extremes: "Fear" and "Love". Fear is in the negative energy spectrum. Love is in the positive energyspectrum.
SEAN
(to Donnie)
No duh.
MS. FARMER
Excuse me?
(defensive)
"No duh" is a productof fear.

She stares them downfor a moment... shaking her head.

DONNIE (CONT'D)
I'm sorry, Ms. Farmer,I just don't get this.
MS. FARMER
(impatient)
Just place an X inthe appropriate place on the Lifeline.
DONNIE
I just don't get this.Everything can't be lumped intotwo categories. That's too simple.
MS. FARMER
The Lifeline is dividedthat way.
DONNIE
Well, life isn't thatsimple. So what if Ling Ling keptthe cash and returned the wallet? That has nothing to do with eitherfear or love.
MS. FARMER
(impatient)
Fear and love arethe deepest of human emotions.
DONNIE
Well, yeah... OK,but you're not listening to me.
DONNIE (CONT'D)
There are other thingsthat need to be taken into accounthere. Like the whole spectrum ofhuman emotion. You're just lumpingeverything into these two categories...and, like, denying everythingelse.

Ms. Farmer staresat Donnie vehemently. She can't believe what she's hearing.

DONNIE (CONT'D)
People aren't thatsimple.
MS. FARMER
(not knowing how to argue with him)
If you don't completethe assignment, you'll get a zerofor the day.

Donnie thinks fora moment... and then raises his hand.

Donald... let me prefacethis by saying that your Iowascores are...
(looking down at the file)
...intimidating.
(rubbing his temples)
So... let's go overthis again. What exactly did you sayto Ms. Farmer?

Donnie does not answer. We reveal Ms. Farmer standingin the corner.

MS. FARMER
(furious)
He asked me to...forcibly insert the Lifeline exercisecard into my anus.

MS. FARMER
Rose, I'll tell youthis because our daughters have beenon dance team together for two yearsand I respect you as WOMAN. Butafter witnessing your son's behaviourtoday, I have... significant doubts...

Dr. Monnitoff pauses, turns and looks at Donnie. He seems to know something.

76

INT. PHYSICS CLASS- LATER ON

Dr. Monnitoff hasdrawn a diagram on the blackboard. Inhis hand he holds a copyof Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time".

DR. MONNITOFF
So... according toHawking... wormholes might beable to provide a shot cut for jumpingbetween two distant regions ofspace-time.
DONNIE
So... in order totravel back in time, you'd have tohave a big spaceship or somethingthat can travel faster than the speedof light --
DR. MONNITOFF
Theoretically.
DONNIE
-- and be able tofind one of these wormholes.
DR. MONNITOFF
A wormhole with anEinstein-Rosen bridge, which is,theoretically... a wormhole in spacecontrolled by man.
DONNIE
So... that's it?
DR. MONNITOFF
The basic principlesof time travel are there.
(beat)
So you have the vesseland the portal. And the vessel canbe anything. Most likely a spacecraft.
77

EXT. SCHOOL COURTYARD- NEXT

Cherita Chen listensto this conversation intently.

78

INT. PHYSICS CLASS- NEXT

DONNIE
Like a DeLorean.
DR. MONNITOFF
(smiling)
A metal craft of anykind.

Donnie stares at himintently. Dr. Monnitoff walks overto his desk and picksup a book.

DR. MONNITOFF (CONT'D)
Don't tell anybodythat I gave you this.
(beat)
The woman who wroteit... used to teach here a longtime ago. She was a nun for many yearsand then overnight she justbecame this entirely differentperson. She up and left the Church, wrote this book, and started teachingscience.

Donnie takes the batteredbook... we see the cover.

DONNIE
Guess who wrote it?

No one seems to know.

DONNIE (CONT'D)
Grandma Death.
ROSE
That is a terriblenickname.
EDDIE
Grandma Death.
DONNIE
(to Eddie)
You know, RobertaSparrow. We almost hit her with the carthe other day.
ROSE
I've heard she's loaded.

The family is takenaback.

EDDIE
You're right. RobertaSparrow was famous for her gemcollections. Kids used to try and stealstuff from her all the time. Overthe years... as she got older, shebecame more and more of a recluse...now she just likes to stay up thereall by herself.
DONNIE
I guess she just lostfaith in the world.
81

EXT. DARKO BACKYARD- SUNSET (SATURDAY, 5:30 P.M.)

82

INT. THERAPIST'S OFFICE- DAY (SUNDAY, 12 P.M.)

Donnie is back onDr. Thurman's couch.

DR. THURMAN
How many times haveyou seen Frank?
DONNIE
Four times... so far.
DR. THURMAN
Can anyone else seehim?
DONNIE
I don't think so.It's like a TV station. And they'retuned into mine and no one else's.
DR. THURMAN
Who is they? Is Frankpart of some larger group?
DONNIE
I don't know. Gretchenhas a theory. That Frank is a sign.I told her I thought it was ridiculous.
DR. THURMAN
A sign from whom?
DONNIE
(changing the subject)
I think that Frankwants me to go to this woman.
(holding up the book)
She wrote a book abouttime travel. Frank asked me ifI believed in time travel. That can'tjust be a random coincidence.
(beat)
My dad almost hither with the car the other day, andshe said the creepiest thing. She said that every living creature onthis earth dies alone.
DR. THURMAN
How does that makeyou feel?
DONNIE
It reminded me ofmy dog Callie.
DR. THURMAN
Is Callie still around?
DONNIE
No. She died whenI was eight. We couldn't find herfor days. She went and crawled underneathour back porch...
DR. THURMAN
Do you feel aloneright now?

He looks at her fora moment.

DONNIE
I'd like to believethat I'm not... but I've just neverseen any proof. So I just choose notto bother with it. It's, like, Icould spend my whole life thinkingabout it... debating it in myhead. Weighing the pros and cons. And in the end, I still wouldn't haveany proof. So ...I don't even debateit any more. Because it's absurd.
(beat)
I don't want to bealone.
(beat)
So, does that makeme, like, an atheist?
DR. THURMAN
No. That makes youkeep searching.

Donnie takes thisin for a moment.

83

(taking a sip of wine)
I can't believe he'snot married.

Samantha bounces throughthe kitchen and into the family room, wearing a Dorothyoutfit from "The Wizard of Oz".

85

INT. FAMILY ROOM -NEXT

Donnie sits back inthe La-Z Boy, dozing off...

John Madden's CBSchalkboard unfolds on the TV screen.Madden traces his electroniclines across the screen, tracingthe movement of the players...as their images are frozenin time.

Donnie's eyes close...and then re-open.

Donnie turns his headand sees that the room is momentarily bathed in artificialwhite light, as if God hit the slow- motion button duringa flash of lightning.

Donnie turns his headand sees that protruding from his father's stomach...is a thick spear made of silvery plastic gel.

As Eddie gets up fromthe couch to walk over to the refrigerator ...hisspear precedes him... morphing intoan extruded arrow thatreaches the refrigerator several seconds before him.

The spear traces theexact geography of his movement through time... using his centreof gravity as its axis point.

Donnie turns and seesSamantha skipping from the kitchen... as her spear bouncesseveral feet in front of her likea caterpillar.

Her spear... smallerthan her father's... is proportionalto her mass.

SAMANTHA
(her voice echoing through the silence)
Follow the yellowbrick road...

Donnie looks downat his stomach and sees his own spear protruding outward. It then begins to extrude forwardtowards the foyer.

He does not followit. It then retreats back in and beckons him to follow.

(screaming)
GOOD MORNING!
JIM CUNNINGHAM
Are you AFRAID?
AUDIENCE
(screaming louder)
GOOD MORNING!
JIM CUNNINGHAM
Now that's what Ilike to hear!
(suddenly serious)
Because too many youngmen and women today are paralysedby their fears. They give in to theirfeelings of self-doubt... theysurrender their bodies to the temptationsof drugs, alcohol and premaritalsex. Empty solutions. Theseare toxic chemicals ...and disease-spreadingbehaviour.

A large screen lowersbehind him.

JIM CUNNINGHAM (CONT'D)
I would like to tellyou a story today about a youngman whose life was destroyed by theinstruments of fear. A young mansearching for love... in all thewrong places.

DORKY GIRL
I'm just trying tohelp you!
JIM CUNNINGHAM
There's no need tobe embarrassed. Many times we eatbecause we are afraid to face thereality of our ego reflections. We shouldn't just look INTO the mirror. We should look THROUGH the mirror.

LANKY KID
Thank you.

Donnie gets up fromhis seat and goes to the mike.

LARRY RIESMAN
What can I do to learnhow to fight?

(to Larry)
And you... Sick ofsome jerk shoving your head in a toilet? Then go lift some weights... takea karate lesson. And when he triesto do it again... kick him in the balls.

More rumblings fromthe faculty... Laughter from the students gets louder.

JIM CUNNINGHAM
(getting angry)
I think you are afraidto ask me for advice. I think thatyou are a very troubled... confusedyoung man. I think you're searchingfor answers in all the wrong places.

DONNIE
(to himself)
Like a spear.
DR. MONNITOFF
Beg pardon?
DONNIE
Like a spear thatcomes out of your stomach?
DR. MONNITOFF
Uhh... sure. And inorder for the vessel to travel throughtime it must find the portal,in this case the wormhole, or someunforeseen portal that lies undiscovered.
DONNIE
Could these wormholesappear in nature?
DR. MONNITOFF
That... is highlyunlikely. You're talking about an actof God.
DONNIE
If God controls time...then all time is pre-decided.Then every living thing travels alonga set path.
DR. MONNITOFF
I'm not followingyou.
DONNIE
If you could see yourpath or channel growing out of yourstomach, you could see into thefuture. And that's a form of time travel, right?
DR. MONNITOFF
You are contradictingyourself, Donnie. If we couldsee our destines manifest themselvesvisually... then we would be giventhe choice to betray our chosen destinies. The very fact that this choice exists...would mean that all pre-formeddestiny would end.
DONNIE
Not if you chose tostay within God's channel...
DR. MONNITOFF
(cutting him off)

MS. POMEROY
You call this... clarity?I don't think you have a cluewhat it's really like to communicatewith these kids. You don't think thatthey can smell your bullshit froma mile away? Every day that goes by ...thatwe fail to... inspire them...is another moment that we alllose. And we are losing them to apathy, and this... prescribed nonsense. They are slipping away...

They're cute... and they're horny. And if you're cute and horny...then you're probably happy that you don'tknow who you are... or why you'reeven alive. But the only thing I'veknown rabbits to do is have sex asmany times as possible before theydie.
